Found off Highway 2, between Calgary
and Edmonton in Alberta's
Heartland, Innisfail was once known as Poplar Grove. At that time, it was
a resting spot for travellers along the First Nations trail between Fort Calgary
and Fort Edmonton. The first permanent settlers moved in during the 1880s, attracted
by agricultural opportunities. With the construction of the railway in 1891, the
population flourished and the bustling village was renamed Innisfail, meaning
“Isle of Destiny.” Visitors enjoy delving into the town's pioneering past at the
Innisfail
Historical Village. Innisfail's modern-day country lifestyle is also a big
attraction, and many dig into various “pick-your-own” farms, while animal lovers
delight in the bear and lion movie stars at the Discovery
Wildlife Park. The Daines
Rodeo Ranch hosts many exciting events during the year, including the Innisfail
Professional Rodeo in June and the Ivan
Daines Cowboy Country Music Picknic in August. Boating and fishing is popular
on the nearby Red
Deer River and Glennifer
Reservoir, and that big prairie sky beckons adventurous sky divers.
